Father's Day 2026 in Chicago — The Steakhouse, the Smoke Joint, or the Patio
Father's Day 2026 in Chicago falls on Sunday June 15. Where to book by Friday for the high-end steakhouses, where to walk in for the BBQ joints, and which patios are the move if the weather holds.
Father's Day 2026 lands on Sunday, June 15 — the second-heaviest reservation weekend of the year in Chicago, after Mother's Day. The same River North steakhouses that filled up by Wednesday in May will fill up just as fast in June. Here's the playbook.
Book by Friday June 5
The marquee steakhouses sell out 10–14 days ahead. The hierarchy:
- Chicago Cut Steakhouse (River North) — the steakhouse you book when "Dad picks the place" gets answered with "you pick."
- Mastro's Steakhouse (River North) — the loud, see-and-be-seen room. Loud cocktail program.
- RPM Steak (River North) — the Lettuce Entertain You play. Polished, consistent, less of a scene than Mastro's.
- Maple & Ash (Gold Coast) — wood-fired, theatrical, runs a "Tomahawk for the table" move that's exactly the Father's Day play.
- El Che Steakhouse & Bar (West Loop) — Argentine asado, the most distinctive room in the city for steak. Worth the West Loop trip.
- Boeufhaus (Humboldt Park) — French-influenced, smaller, more under the radar. The play for a dad who's "over" River North.
If the high-end rooms are full by the time you read this, the second tier still holds: Bavette's (River North), Smith & Wollensky (River North), Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse (Gold Coast), Morton's Wacker Place (The Loop).
The Smoke Joint Move
For the dad who would rather sit in a vinyl booth with a tray of ribs than a white tablecloth:
- Smoque BBQ (Portage Park) — the Chicago BBQ benchmark. Worth the trip from anywhere in the city.
- Sanders BBQ Supply Co. (Beverly) — south side standby. The rewards program is worth signing up for before you order.
- Briny Swine Smokehouse (Lincoln Park) — north side BBQ that holds up. Their $9 BBQ Burger is a sleeper.
- The Levee (Belmont Cragin) — Signature BBQ Platter at $21.99. Northwest-side neighborhood spot.
Memorial Day weekend (May 23–25) is the warm-up for this lineup. Most of these run the same menu through Father's Day with extra weekend coverage.
The Patio Play
If June 15 hits 75°F and sunny, the steakhouse reservation is the wrong call. Skip it and go patio:
- River North rooftops — Apogee, Cabra, ROOF on theWit. Book lunch, not dinner.
- West Loop garden patios — Athena (Mediterranean), Avec (Mediterranean), Aviary (cocktails).
- Logan Square beer gardens — The Whistler, Lulu's, Owen & Engine for proper pub food.
- Wicker Park sidewalk patios — Big Star (tacos), The Map Room (beer), Piece (pizza).
The patio play also works for Father's Day brunch, which most steakhouses run through 3 PM with dad-friendly menus (steak and eggs, hash, big breakfast skillets).
The Bourbon-Bar Backup
When the dinner is at home but Dad wants a flight afterwards:
- Delilah's (Lincoln Park) — the Chicago whiskey institution. 1,200+ whiskeys behind the bar.
- Twain (Wicker Park) — smaller, sharper, the new-school play.
- Longman & Eagle (Logan Square) — bourbon list plus a kitchen, plus rooms upstairs if anyone overstays.
- Bavette's Bar & Boeuf (River North) — the bar half of the steakhouse runs flights without needing the dinner reservation.
The Reservation Math
Reservation-only rooms typically open 30 days ahead, which means May 16 is when the Father's Day Sunday seatings opened. By May 19, the prime times (6:30–8:30 PM) at the top tier are likely already gone. Your move:
- Friday May 22 — last realistic window for the top six steakhouses listed above.
- Friday June 5 — last window for any reservation-only room.
- Wednesday June 11 — last window for Saturday June 14 dinner anywhere.
- Friday June 13 — last window for Sunday June 15 brunch reservations.
- Saturday June 14 + Sunday June 15 — walk-ins only at this point. Patios, beer gardens, BBQ joints, neighborhood bars all run normal.
Looking Ahead
The week after Father's Day is the start of Chicago festival summer — Blues Fest (early June), Pride (June 28), July 4, Lollapalooza (late July). Father's Day is the last "calm" weekend before the city flips into festival mode.
Until then: book early for the steakhouse, plan the patio backup, and have a plan B that involves bourbon.
